Applying for your first mortgage (or even your second or third) can be daunting. Your lender will ask you to provide several documents to start the process. Knowing what you need ahead of time and having the information readily available will speed along the process and reduce stress.

You will need to provide the following documents when applying for a mortgage loan:

1. Proof of income, such as recent pay stubs, W-2 forms, and/or tax returns
2. Proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or passport
3. Bank account statements
4. Investment account statements, if applicable
5. Your credit report (the loan officer will run this for you)
6. Documentation of any debt you have, such as car payments, student loans, and credit card bills
7. Documentation of any assets you have, such as real estate holdings, stocks, and bonds
